Session Overview
The New World of Identification
Track: Pervasive Security Roundtable
Thursday May/24/2007
11:00 - 12:30
Biometric identification is now a standard type of technology being used to secure physical and logical assets, quite often in a converged matter by a combination of security and IT departments in most corporations.
With new mandates from the U.S. government for better identification technologies and standards, including FIP-201 is now necessary in all GSA (General Services Administration) facilities, and quite likely soon in an increasing number of non-government facilities.
This session will describe the current status of these developments, standards and technologies and will uncover for the attendees an array of opportunities, many of them brought about by implementing new technologies and solutions upon existing and green-field sites.

Moving to an Identity Centric Model
It is time to move from equipment centric view of identity, where access control hardware (readers, control systems, etc) define the identity of an individual, to an identity centric model. The systems are “on top” anymore.
The identity of the person and the management of that identity, throughout the lifecycle of their involvement with the enterprise is the central element. The credentials needed by various systems become attributes of this identity. This is another aspect of “convergence” happening in today’s facilities – the convergence of physical and logical access control. Establishing the core identity management structure to support these functions is a necessary component of the convergence process.
